The Deutschlandmuseum was the first German museum to be honoured with the prestigious Thea Award, the Oscar of the entertainment industry.

Pioneering a unique way to explore history, the Deutschlandmuseum combines the insights of a museum with the state-of-the-art facilities of a theme park. Construction of the museum began at the end of 2022 and it opened on 17 June 2023 as the sister museum of the German Spy Museum, which opened in 2015.

The development team

The museum was conceived by a team of historians, designers, teachers, graphic designers, game developers and architects under the leadership of managing director Robert Rückel and designer Chris Lange.

Thea Award 2020

Thea Award 2024, Los Angeles: a large part of the development team travelled to Hollywood in March 2024

Prior to his decision to open the Deutschlandmuseum, Robert Rückel was responsible for the establishment of the DDR Museum Berlin in 2006 (nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award 2008), the extension of its permanent exhibition in 2010 (nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award 2010) and the reworking of the German Spy Museum in 2018 (nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award 2020).

Chris Lange (Creative Studio Berlin) is the award-winning designer of a number of theme parks including Rulantica water park (Thea Award 2020, Leading Edge Award 2020), a range of visitor attractions at Europapark (Golden Ticket Award for Pirates in Batavia 2020), Shrek’s Adventure in London, a number of dungeon experiences in major European cities and Legoland Discovery Centre.

Constantin Bänfer and Jonas Kartenbeck, also responsible for the design of the DDR Museum Berlin and the German Spy Museum, developed the graphics and designed some of the media installations and the abstract rooms of the Deutschlandmuseum.
